So the touring has been a LITTLE LESS since last March WHEN we HAD OUR BABY! Eilidh Block is now almost 5 months old and has already attended three fiddle camps and has a Danish stamp in her passport! I’m headed back out on the road this fall with trio shows in the Mid-Atlantic and the west coast, and the CHILDSPLAY FAREWELL TOUR on the east coast. Excited to be playing a few of the trio shows with cellist Tristan Clarridge (from Crooked Still and the Bee Eaters.) We hope to see you at a show somewhere… I’ll be playing my D’Addario strings and Eilidh will be eating the wrapper. :)
So I've been working on a book for like three years.... and I've been TALKING about making a book for like 20 years. :) It is FINALLY done. Just released, The Cassel Collection features the original tunes from my first three albums -- My Joy, Some Melodious Sonnet, and Silver. The tunes were transcribed by pianist Dave Wiesler and the book was beautifully designed by Adam Agee. I'm so happy it's DONE! Now... I gotta start working on Volume 2...
Mike and I just returned from China where we had an INCREDIBLE time at Youth Music Culture Guangzhou. I had a lot of fun teaching Brenda Stubbert's Reel to a bunch of Chinese musicians... I even got a few of them to learn the basic reel step. We had a great time with our fellow teachers, including Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Especially thrilling for me was getting to perform my tune Leila's Birthday with Edgar and Mike. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS include dumplings, karaoke, and 70 degree weather in January. I miss it ALREADY.
This month, we had a great time at the Celtic Colours International Festival in Cape Breton. I met Buddy MacMaster when I was 15 on the Isle of Skye, Scotland and he gave me a deep love for this beautiful, musical island in Nova Scotia. Our shows were all really fun and we had the chance to collaborate with a bunch of great musicians including the band Imar, singer-songwriter Paul McKenna, and Rhiannon Giddens & Dirk Powell. A wicked. good. time. :)
During our CD release tour of the west coast back in May, we managed to squeeze in a trip to the Strings studio in Richmond, CA to record a few tunes from the new album. We love the community at Strings Magazine... and had a great day with them. :) :)
I just started the 2nd week of the Mike Block String Camp in Vero Beach, FL. We've been having an amazing time jamming, beach partying, Beyoncé workout-ing, step-dancing, eating, and MUCH MUCH MORE! Excited about the 2nd instructor concert THIS WEEK, July 12, at the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach. 7:30pm. SEE YOU THERE????!?!?!??
We had an amazing time at Club Passim the other night. We managed to play all the tunes on the new album and we knew ALMOST everyone in the crowd. Portland, ME is coming up and is the last New England show for this tour (don't worry ... we'll be back!) Keith Murphy and Mike Block will be ROCKIN it up there. Hope you can join us on SEIS de MAYO!!
It's UPON us. Tomorrow we'll be playing 2 shows at our favorite HOME TOWN venue, Club Passim. I've been practicing in B major 8 hours a day to be able to play the title track for you all. Jeremy Kittel, Dave Wiesler, Keith Murphy, and Mike Block will all be there rocking it. We can't WAIT!!!
And for those of you who don't live in the wicked sweet state of Massachusetts, both shows (5pm and 8pm) will be broadcast LIVE ONLINE at https://www.concertwindow.com/clubpassim
